Apply Kit for Backend Engineer

Backend Apply Kit for systems and API roles

Match each backend JD with a tailored resume and cover, mark Applied, then measure reply and interview outcomes.

Backend engineer postings want APIs, data, and reliability — not a frontend portfolio with a services footnote. If the JD repeats p99, datastore, and on-call, lead with those. A “full stack” resume that never names the runtime or the queue will parse weaker than a shorter backend version.

Put language, datastore, and scale next to the system you owned. Echo the posting’s nouns when they are true: Postgres vs Dynamo, Kafka vs SQS. Do not invent QPS. Percentages and bands are enough when numbers are confidential.

This page is not the Software Engineer Apply Kit. SWE is the broader IC loop. Backend is the specialized parse: APIs, data model, incidents. Finish tailor → ATS → cover → Applied on one live posting, then log whether you get a reply.

Bring your own JD from LinkedIn, Indeed, or a careers page — we don’t list jobs. Paste → Apply Kit → share pack → log outcomes.

Backend Apply Kit for systems and API roles

What this posting typically asks for:
• Echo language/runtime and datastore names from the JD
• Highlight scale numbers when applying to high-traffic products
• Separate backend from full-stack if the role is specialized

Outcomes we look for:
• Designed APIs serving [QPS/users] with [p99] latency
• Owned data model for [domain]; migrated [system] with zero downtime
• Reduced incident rate by [X%] through [testing / observability]

FAQ

What should a backend engineer Apply Kit include?
One API or platform posting, a resume that puts runtime and datastore in the work bullets, an ATS check on that JD, a cover that names the system you would own, then Applied plus an outcome. It is not a services template download.
Should I list every database and message queue?
No. Lead with the store and bus the posting repeats. A dump of eight queues hides the one they filter on. Put the real ones in the two most recent roles.
How is this different from the Software Engineer Apply Kit?
SWE is the general IC loop. This page is for specialized backend requisitions — latency, data, on-call. If the posting is full-stack or frontend-heavy, use those role pages instead.
I work at a small company. Do I still need scale numbers?
Use what you can defend: users, tables, batch windows, incident rate. Fake millions fail a screen. Apply Kit still wants one finished application per JD, not inflated QPS.
