Guide
How to tailor a teacher resume to a job description
A teacher resume that could belong to any grade belongs to none of them. This guide is one finished pass on a single district posting — certification, grade band, and the framework they named. It is not a philosophy essay and not a promise of an interview.
Read the posting for grade, subject, and certification
Paste the district requisition. Highlight the grade or band, the subject, the certification or endorsement, and any framework that repeats: state standards, a named curriculum, IB, AP, or the assessment they cite. Applicant systems in schools search those nouns the way a corporate ATS searches a stack.
Check that you can defend them. A middle-school math posting is not a place to lead with primary literacy unless the file says you taught both and the posting asked. If the endorsement is missing, skip or say what you do hold. Do not type a certificate you are still waiting on as if it were issued.
Keep one core resume with real schools, dates, and roster facts. The tailored version changes the lead. Same career, different first bullets. A high-school science file and an elementary homeroom file should not be the same PDF.
Put standards next to the class that used them
Open with certification and the grade band from the posting. Then a class you taught: subject, approximate roster size, and a result you can explain — growth on the assessment they named, a unit you built, an IEP caseload you actually carried.
Name the curriculum or standards in the sentence about that class, not in a footer of logos. “Taught grade 4 literacy to 26 students on the district’s reading program; cohort moved a band on the spring screen” is checkable. “Passionate about lifelong learning” is not.
Family communication and team work belong in a bullet with an outcome: conferences held, a attendance change, a co-taught section. A separate philosophy paragraph competes with the grade and subject the parser is looking for.
Check the district file, then finish the teaching kit
Run the tailored file and that same posting through the ATS checker. Missing tokens are usually the grade, the subject, or the certification spelled the way the district spelled it. Add those words where they are true. Do not paste the whole standards document into skills.
Finish the Teacher Apply Kit on that posting: cover if they ask for one, mark Applied, log whether you get a screen. Mentors can review the Apply Pack you actually submitted. This guide is the method. That page is the loop.
Resume.win is not a district job board. Bring a posting you already found. One kit per requisition teaches you more than twenty identical files in a folder.
What a classroom resume should leave off
Leave off a teaching philosophy unless the district asked for it. If they did, it still has to name the grade and the standards in that posting. Leave off clip art, two-column tables that paste as a jumble, and every club you sponsored if the posting is about a tested subject.
Leave off “love of children” as the first line. Lead with certification, grade, and subject. Quantify what you can defend. If a number is a school statistic you did not own, do not put your name on it.
Do not expect this rewrite to book a screen. The district decides. Log the outcome and adjust the next file. We do not publish fake interview rates.
How to do this in one pass
- Copy one district posting. Use the requisition you will actually submit. Resume.win does not list school jobs.
- Mark certification, grade, and subject. Note the framework or assessment they repeat. Skip tokens you cannot defend.
- Rewrite the most recent teaching role. Lead with the grade band. Put standards and roster facts in that role, not only in a summary.
- ATS-check, then finish the Teacher Apply Kit. Score the same JD, write a cover only if they asked, mark Applied, and log the screen.
FAQ
- Do school districts parse resumes the way companies do?
- Many use an applicant system that searches certification, grade, and subject. Treat those words as literal. A designed PDF that pastes as a jumble fails here too.
- Should I attach a teaching philosophy to every application?
- Only when the posting asks. Apply Kit is the resume, the ATS check, the cover, and the Applied record. A philosophy still has to mention the grade and standards in that requisition.
- How long should tailoring a teacher resume take?
- About half an hour for one posting when schools, dates, and subjects are already on the core file. Build that base first if you are still writing a generic educator summary.
- Is this the same as the Teacher Apply Kit page?
- No. This guide is the rewrite. The Teacher Apply Kit page is where you finish tailor, ATS, cover, and Applied on a live posting. Use both.
