Guide
How to write a cover letter from a job description
A cover letter that could be sent to any company should be sent to none. This guide is one letter for one live job description — the role they named, one proof from the resume you are actually attaching, and a stop when they said not to include a letter.
Use the posting as the outline
Read the first screen of the requisition, not the benefits block. Note the title, the team or unit, and the two or three requirements they repeat. Those lines are the outline. A letter that never says the title back is a generic introduction with the company name swapped.
Open with the role and one sentence on why that requirement matches work you have done. Skip “I am excited to apply.” The reader already knows you applied. They are checking whether you read the posting.
If the employer says applications without a letter are fine, or the form has no letter field, do not invent one for the sake of this guide. Finish the resume kit and mark Applied. A letter nobody asked for is extra noise.
Name one proof from the resume, not a new career
Pick a single bullet you can defend: a system, a unit, a class, a metric. Restate it in a sentence that uses a noun from the posting. The letter should not introduce a job, a skill, or a number that is absent from the resume in the same packet.
Keep it short. Three short paragraphs are enough: the role, the proof, and how you will do that work here. A page of biography competes with the resume. Hiring managers who read letters read the first half.
Match tone to the posting. A hospital unit letter names the floor. A teaching letter names the grade. A software letter names the system. Do not paste the engineer structure onto a clinical posting with the nouns swapped.
Generate it inside the same kit as the resume
The cover letter generator on Resume.win writes from the job description you pasted. Use that posting, not a remembered summary. Then read the draft and delete any claim the resume does not support.
Save the letter on that job. Apply Kit keeps the resume version, the letter, and Applied together so you can see which packet got a reply. A letter living in a downloads folder is disconnected from the outcome.
Run the ATS check on the resume, not on the letter. Keyword fit belongs on the file the parser reads first. The letter is for the person. Both still have to describe the same work.
What to cut before you send the letter
Cut salary demands unless they asked. Cut a list of every tool you have touched. Cut apologies for gaps; put dates on the resume instead. Cut “references available upon request.”
Cut any sentence you could send to a second company by changing only the name. If the swap works, the letter is not tailored. Put the team, the product, or the unit back in.
Do not treat a finished letter as a screen. Employers decide. Log what happens after you mark Applied. We do not publish fake reply rates.
How to do this in one pass
- Paste one live job description. Use the posting you will submit. Skip the letter if the employer said not to include one.
- Pick one proof already on the resume. A metric, a system, a unit, or a class you can discuss. Do not add a new claim in the letter.
- Draft three short paragraphs. Role, proof, and the work you would do there. Use their title and one repeated requirement.
- Save it on the Apply Kit and mark Applied. Generate from that JD, edit the draft, then log the outcome on the same job.
FAQ
- How long should a cover letter from a job description be?
- Three short paragraphs. Long enough to name the role and one proof. Short enough that a manager can finish it. A full autobiography belongs nowhere in the packet.
- Should I send a cover letter when the posting says it is optional?
- Send one only if you can make it specific to that JD in a few sentences. If you would reuse last month’s letter, skip it and finish the resume kit.
- Can the letter mention a skill that is not on the resume?
- No. The packet should agree with itself. Add the skill to the resume only when it is true and relevant, then mention it. Do not let the letter outrun the file.
- Is this the same as the cover letter generator page?
- No. This guide is the method. The cover letter page is where you generate a draft from one pasted JD and save it on the Apply Kit. Read this, then use that page on a live posting.
